You're Hot Then You're Cold Part Deux

1st outfit: dress: zara (available here) shoes (in both outfits): vince (available here) // leather ball cap (available here)
2nd outfit: coat: zara (similar here) // sweater: gap (available here) // pants: fab'rik (similar here) // bag: madewell (available here)

I'm not joking with you about this weather….last Thursday I wore these leopard print pants with a thick sweater and wool coat and was still a little chilly…the next day it got up to 73 and this sweatshirt dress was almost too hot. And well to be honest my leather sneaks and baseball cap were sitting by the front door both days so they were what went on my head and feet…..done and done.

Long Cool Woman with a Black Dress

dress: castles couture (available here) // boots: shoemint (similar here) // hat: stylemint (similar here) // necklace: stella & dot

For the first time ever I'm completely content with what hangs in my closet... its because I tuned out what EVERYONE else was buying and learned what I actually love. Once you drown out all of the sequins and bows and sparkles and feathers and superfluous junk that's out there and listen to your own voice... I think you will like what you find….in your wardrobe AND your life :)

Winters in NC are about as unpredictable as Kanye West these days. One day its 70 degrees and the next day the high is in the 40s…On the day I wore this outfit it got up to 70 and I sweat my little leather hot pants off….but the day we shot this outfit it was in the 50s….so the cowl on my face is because I'm frozen. I'm not trying to be smug or coy….I was just flippin cold.

You know when you put an outfit on and it just feels right? This shirt has been in heavy rotation over the past couple of months; dressed up, dressed down…it just works with everything. So naturally thrown over  a pair of leggings with some leather sneaks it did the trick. Also, you guys know I love pairing unexpected items together so of course a dressy camel coat went right over top of this…and the hat…well lets just chalk that up to mom hair :)

I read a quote recently that stuck with me…"Cling tight to anything that gives you passion". I don't remember who it was by or where I read it but man it got me thinking. I can't prance around in huge fluffy tulle skirts or heels every day (nor do I want to)….for the most part everyday is spent RUNNING after my child. But I refuse to sacrifice my style so I'm always trying to come up with ways to inject my personality into my mom clothes. This vintage cape did just that. PS who can name the movie that my post title is from?

Winter Shoe Guide

Being from a coastal town in North Carolina and now living in a relatively bigger city it has come to my attention over the past couple of years that women (and men) can't seem to grasp the concept that flip flops in 40 degree weather are just not appropriate. This guide will help you determine what styles you already have and the holes you still need to fill in your shoe wardrobe.

These are the 10 pairs of shoes every woman should own for winter. Now before you get all "10 pairs? what?! let me say that you probably already own several of them because they are season switchovers from summer and fall. Let's get started shall we?

Sidenote: I did a regularly scheduled outfit post Friday so be sure to check that out ;)

1. Ankle Boots

Ankle boots are actually the perfect shoe for every season. In the winter obviously they add the perfect amount of edge to any outfit and they keep your feet warm….win-win if you ask me. Neutral pairs are obviously what you should invest in first and if you feel so inclined you could even throw in a printed pair or you could even go with a stacked heel for a dressier effect.

2. Moccasins

Yes, when worn the right way moccasins can be a great casual shoe staple. I'm not saying throw them on with your pjs and head to the grocery store but with a casual put together outfit they are totally acceptable (and comfortable) to run around town in.

3. Oxfords

It doesn't matter what your style is, oxfords are the perfect way to inject a masculine touch into more feminine ensembles. They are also a way more interesting option than ballet flats. Pair them with everything from dresses to casual denim.

4. Sneakers

I'm not talking about your run of the mill running shoes here people…there are so many interesting options for sneakers like velvet high tops or leather slips ons….being comfortable does not mean looking frumpy. Now throw some awesome sneaks on and get going.

5. Animal Print

Whether it be flats, heels or boots animal print is the easiest way to update your shoe wardrobe. They add instant interest to an outfit and can be worn day or night…They can also take an outfit from day to night.

6. Skimmers

Skimmers are like ballet flats except that instead of a rounded toe they have a pointed toe. If you can't wear heels than these are a great alternative to elongating the leg line. They can be worn with literally everything in your closet.

7. Stilletos

I know these don't really need an explanation…but at some point or another every woman needs a pair of stilettos for some occasion…especially in the colder months when wedges and sandals are just not appropriate.  A pair of lower heeled pumps is acceptable BUT only if they make you look and feel fierce.

8. Metallic Pumps

These especially come in handy for  those gazillion holiday parties you are about to have to endure. The metallic pump literally says "happy holidays" in a shoe form. They are definitely not just for winter or for the holidays but what a great addition to your shoe wardrobe.

9. Heeled Booties

The heeled bootie might be one of the pairs you are lacking for winter since they are more for the colder months although not exclusively so. They are great for dressing up an outfit but can also be worn with jeans.

10. Over the Knee Boots

And the best for last, over the knee boots have become a new winter staple. Yes these are not a season switchover but they are worth the investment as they can be worn with everything from cutoffs to dresses to denim.
